Commercial auto in Central Florida: when your work truck may need its own policy
The truck has your logo on the door. A ladder rack on top. A trailer hitch that hauls mulch, junk, or a food trailer on Saturdays. On the declarations page, it may still be insured like the car you drive to church.
In Central Florida, a work truck may need its own commercial auto policy. Whether it does depends on how the vehicle is used, who owns it, who drives it, and what your personal policy says about business use. We won’t guess from a blog. We will tell you what to check.
Personal use vs business use
Personal auto policies are written for personal driving. Many of them treat business use differently: hauling tools or materials for paying jobs, carrying equipment, or driving to job sites all day may not be what the policy expected. Some personal policies allow limited business use. Some don’t. The wording is what matters.
Warning signs worth a review:
- The vehicle is titled to your LLC or business, not to you
- Your business name or logo is on it
- Employees or helpers drive it
- It tows a trailer or carries equipment for paid work
- You run more than one work vehicle
Hired and non-owned auto, in plain words
Sometimes the vehicle isn’t yours at all. An employee runs to the supply store in their own car. You rent a box truck for one big job. Hired and non-owned auto coverage is how many businesses address liability for vehicles they use but don’t own. It’s often added to a business policy, and it’s easy to forget until someone has a wreck on the clock.
Small fleets: landscapers, junk removal, handymen, food trailers
Once you have two or three vehicles and a couple of drivers, the questions change: who’s listed as a driver, what their records look like, which vehicles have physical damage coverage, and whether the trailer is covered on its own. A fleet review lines all of that up in one place.
Your vehicles are only part of the picture. The liability for the work itself sits elsewhere. See liability and BOP is not just GL. For unusual vehicles and drivers, see specialty auto.

Your logo is on the truck. Ask whether the policy matches it.
